Maths - Division using an Area Model

Yesterday we had fun investigating division using an area model.

The example displayed in the pictures below is as follows: 96 ÷ 4

First you draw a rectangle, placing the dividend (96) inside the rectangle. You then decide how to split the 96 (dividend) so that you can easily divide by 4: For example, it could be 48 & 48, or 32, 32 & 32, or 88 & 8 etc.

You then use the concept of calculating area (L X B) to discover the unknown length of the rectangle.You draw your rectangles under the original according to how you have split the 96.

You then do your division calculations (if using 88 & 8 it would be 88 ÷ 4 & 8 ÷ 4 , then add the quotients (answers) together to formulate your answer (22 + 2 = 24).

As revision for Monday's next step which will work in reverse, please ask your child to explain it to you.
