Guest Speakers today

Ms. Kunthea - JASS

Today we had Ms. Kunthea come to talk to us about gender equality and feminism.

Students were asked to think about what it means to be a boy and what it means to be a girl.

This was actually a tough question at first for students to answer, but after discussion with teachers in small groups it became clearer.

These were some of the things that students mentioned:
What does it mean to be a boy?
  • competitive
  • tough
  • immature
  • better than girls
  • work harder
  • stronger
  • earn money
  • go to school
  • protect the family
  • more freedom
  • smart
  • in charge
  • sportier
What does it mean to be a girl?

  • expect girls to be gentle & kind.
  • education not needed
  • no rights
  • responsible about house work
  • take care of children
  • neat and tidy
  • get married and have children
  • polite
  • silent

We then discussed that some of the things in the boys list could be adopted by girls and that the list above can change, so that women can feel empowered.

Students learnt that it is important for people to enjoy their rights, so we have to stand up and be a voice for equality!

Here are some photos to tell the story.

Ms. Amy - Wildlife Alliance

Ms. Amy shared her experiences and knowledge about saving Cambodia's wildlife through a detailed PPT. Students were really interested in this topic and had a lot of questions and experiences to share. It was an animated discussion with a lot of strong feelings from the M & M class group!

We concluded with the agreement that we would call the Wildlife Rescue Hotline if/when we see wild animals in danger.

We then wrote our reflections on our blog and updated our concentric circle document to reflect our thoughts and ideas.

Next week, when we return to normal from the Barge Trip/Host Country week, we will make some decisions about what we would like to research further.

Let the learning continue on....
