M & Ms this week

It was a big week for G5 as they tackled the ISA tests early in the week.

Whilst they were nervous and anxious, we were proud of how our students focused on each task with maturity and determination.

Afterwards, they were able to reflect with the same maturity, whilst also offering some advice for themselves for next year.

To continue our investigation into materials, students joined Mr Matt as he explained how a computer works by pulling it apart piece by piece, informing us of what each part does, as well as explaining how to act with care and consideration for the object and ourselves.

Students' curiosity led them to taking notes and investigating aspects they were curious about themselves online and in books.  It was great to see their natural curiosity take hold and develop as the lesson progressed.

Our UOI word study has led us to making connections with the natural world, such as learning about the various uses of material, the changes they go through and the responsibility the world has when disposing of the variety of materials that exist.

We took the opportunity on Friday to wander the school to see how many different materials existed and what they were used for. We then made connections between what we saw at school and what we had discovered at home for our homework task. This led to a discussion of how to record our findings and a lesson on graphing. We talked about the type of graph that would be appropriate for the data we collected, sought advice from BrainPOP and discovered that a bar graph was the appropriate choice for discrete data. We then set about tallying our results in a tally chart and then transposing the information onto a bar graph.

During this next week we will analyse our results in a variety of ways that will see us discovering which material is used more widely, as well as making comparisons between the differing areas in which we collected our data.

An interesting discovery for some students was that they did not collect enough data to produce optimum results, as they compared their data to their peers. They concluded that further data will be needed in order to achieve a fair and valid analysis of materials used in our world.

TO AMY!

In one of our ISA breaks, we celebrated Amy's big day with cake! With the help of GO NOODLE we sang the Birthday Hooray to Amy! Thanks to Amy's family for providing cake for Amy to share with us! It was truly appreciated and delicious!
