Literature Circles

This week we discussed what our literature circle sessions will look like. We formed groups based on our interests and went to the library and chose a book to read as a group. The table below shows the groupings and what each group are reading.

Next week, we will hold our 'reading conversations' in groups, whereby students will share their thoughts gathered from reading the book, as well as presenting and encouraging a discussion about the focus they chose.  Each member of the group chose a role that becomes their individual focus to bring into the discussion. Those roles are as follows:

  1. Discussion Director
  2. Summariser
  3. Literary Luminary
  4. Word Wizard
There are some more roles mentioned below that will become part of the reading conversation throughout the week that will be shared within the group as a whole.
  • Connector
  • Travel Tracer
  • Researcher
  • Illustrator
As the weeks go by, students will become more familiar with each role and that is when our reading conversations will really come alive.

Please ask your child about their role, encouraging them to ask questions and clarify with their peers and teachers, so that they can become more comfortable with these conversations.

NOTE: Yesterday, I gave each student a sheet titled 'Conversation Starters' (link below). This was devised so that parents can hold reading conversations with their child as well. Just choose 3 or 4 questions to get your child talking with you about what they are reading, as this will help to build their confidence at school.
