1) Tuk Tuk Field Trip - Call for parent help.
As part of the current Sharing the Planet unit of inquiry, the Grade 5
students will be identifying issues that are significant to their local
environment. They will be selecting one of these issues to inquire into in more
depth as the unit unfolds. On Tuesday 3rd November, students will get the
opportunity to observe and identify some of the issues that affect the local
area when they take a tuk tuk on a short tour around Phnom Penh. The tour will
visit areas close to our school. It will then head south along Norodom before
returning to school via Tonle Bassac.
Whilst touring, students will observe and record things that they see
that may be relevant issues for them to investigate further. Students will
travel in groups of three accompanied by one adult in a tuk tuk. Each class
will go separately during the day and the trip will last approximately one
hour. These are the times for each class:
07:45 - 08:45 - Ms. Melinda’s class
09:45 - 10:45 - Ms. Emily’s class
12:45 - 13:45 - Mr. James’ class
There will be eight tuk tuks booked. Therefore we will need some parent
helpers to accompany the children in the tuk tuk. Please fill in the slip below
indicating that you give permission for your child to attend this tuk tuk field
trip. Please also indicate whether you are able to accompany a group of
children on that day. Please return the completed permission slip before
Wednesday 28 October.

2) Call for parent guest speakers for our Sharing the Planet unit.
Dear parents/guardians,
Our Grade 5 students will be starting their new unit next week, based on
the transdisciplinary theme “Sharing the Planet”.
Central Idea: Understanding how
communities share resources and provide opportunities………….
- The ways humans share resources (function)
- Personal, community, country and world
connections (connections)
- Human’s responsibility (responsibility)
During the unit, students will be asked to identify issues that have
significance to them and to their local environment and choose one as the basis
for their inquiry. To help the children identify relevant local issues we would
like to invite guest speakers to talk to the children. If you are associated
with an NGO or organisation that works in Phnom Penh/Cambodia and would be
prepared to come in to talk to the Grade 5s about a particular issue and how it
impacts the local community, we would love to hear from you.
We would be interested in having guest speakers come in during the weeks
of 2nd-6th November and the 9th -13th November. If you can help us, please fill in the form below
outlining the issue that you can talk about, the organisation you are involved
with and potential dates that you can visit us.
Kind regards,
The Grade 5 team
