We started the day with Silas Everett, from the Asia Foundation. They work to improve lives and expand opportunities as follows:
The people and natural resources of Cambodia remain at risk of exploitation, and the ongoing violation of basic rights threaten the country's democratic development. Despite these challenges, we help strengthen governance and democracy; support vulnerable communities in protecting their basic rights; and enhance opportunities for long-term sustainable development by reducing barriers to growth and enhancing citizen engagement in local decision-making.
We discussed how they work to protect basic human rights and how they work with governments to enhance opportunities for all people.
Later, we created a summary together to get to the heart of what can be done to support our local community.
In the afternoon, Mr Ray Cantwell from Samaritans Purse came to talk to us about water and sanitation.
It was a very enlightening discussion, made more real through using student volunteers to create a community map.
Our eyes were opened to the reality of life in small villages, which made us think from a different perspective and understand the reality that for many people access to clean water is not possible.
Here are some pictures of the day.
A clever link to lack of water that helped the issue to become real for our students.
NOTE: the empty jar!
