This enabled students to see the different perspectives that exist for their issue to provide them with a broader knowledge base.
Students used a document to guide their thinking for each speaker as follows:
First Speaker
Second Speaker
Third Speaker
The first group of students did a great job, considering it was our first attempt to debate. The audience was impressed with their clarity of speech, the solid arguments they prepared, as well as the confident way their addressed any rebuttals.
Afterwards the audience was given a chance to address the issue and add any thoughts they had or ask questions to either debate team to clarify any uncertain points. This helped to clarify misunderstandings and add to everyone's understanding of the issue.
Here are pictures of our first debate, the issue was about endangered animals and the motion was:
Wild animals should be hunted.
Morakod, Amy and Champa were the proposition team, that meant debating for the motion, whilst Helen, Danica and Molly were the opposition team who had to oppose the motion.
Our chairperson, Summer Rose introducing the debate motion and the teams.
Summer Rose then introduced the speakers one by one and Max was in control of making sure each speaker kept to time.
First speaker for the proposition team: Morakod
The opposition team: Helen, Danica and Molly
Timekeeper and Chairperson
The first speaker for the opposition: Helen
The proposition team note taking whilst listening to the opposition speaker.
The second speaker for the proposition: Amy
Molly's rebuttal
Second speaker for the opposition: Danica
Third speaker for the proposition: Champa
The third speaker for the opposition: Molly
Our judges, Luca, Amanda and Panhaboth did a great job providing feedback about each team in the form of 2 stars and a wish. After the audience and the judges gave their feedback, Luca then gave the decision. The winning team for this debate by a very close margin was the opposition team of Helen, Danica and Molly.
Well done both teams, you have set the bar high for the debates that will happen on Monday.
Watch this space for the next chapter in The G5 Debates!
