Dear parents and caregivers,
As you are aware we are beginning to complete our unit of inquiry on local issues in Grade 5. The students have all chosen a local issue to inquire into and are performing debates to show the different perspectives of their chosen issue. The Grade 5 teaching team is hoping these local issues will inspire the students for the PYP exhibition.
Trip Suggestions
To strengthen their understanding of Cambodian local issues we have a list of suggested activities you might like to consider for the break or even a weekend trip.
- Irrawaddy Dolphins (Kratie Province)
- Mekong Turtle Conservation Centre (Kratie Province)
- Southern Cardamom Mountain Ranges (South West Cambodia)
- Prey Lang, forest region (Northern Cambodia)
- Cambodian Landmine Museum (Siem Reap)
- Phnom Tamao Wildlife Tour (Phnom Penh)
- Mekong River
- Tonle Sap, Cambodia’s Great Lake
- Tonle Bati (Phonm Penh)
Your child has been doing a lot of research and may find an organization or places they would like to visit. Please discuss this with them. If you have any other suggested activities or places to visit to support the students’ knowledge of Cambodian issues, please email your child’s homeroom teacher.
New Unit
After the break we will be moving onto a new unit of inquiry:
Central Idea: Understanding how organizations face challenges and opportunities helps us to consider the impact on the environment and humankind.
Lines of Inquiry
- Structure and functions of organizations (function)
- Opportunities and challenges organizations face (causation)
- Ways we consider the impact on environment and humankind (reflection)
This unit we will be visiting organizations within Phnom Penh. If you are aware or work for an organization that could be a place for the Grade 5’s to visit, could you please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.
Clothing
At the end of the year it is customary for the Grade 5’s to be involved in a small ‘moving on’ ceremony at the completion of the PYP Programme. The students often like to dress up in smart casual attire. See Ms. Melinda’s or Ms. Emily’s blogs for photographs of last years ceremony. Over the break you might like to shop for this occasion.
Save the Date
On the 23rd and 24th of March the PYP exhibition will be held. Students are expected to attend school on the evening of the 23rd of March to present their exhibition process to the school community. Please ensure you save these dates in your calendar.
Regards,
Grade 5 Teachers
