More debating - Deforestation

Debating continued today with two teams debating the following motion:

There should be a limit to how many trees can be cut down per day.

Cherry, Panhaboth and Luca were the proposition team that argued for the motion, whereas Max, Haziq and Lisa.C. were the opposition team arguing against the motion.

Some interesting points and rebuttals were made and students developed their confidence and strategies as the debate progressed.

However, as students in today's debate had an issue with time management, once the speakers were finished, we halted proceedings to investigate language features to support all students. This exercise helped students to decide on appropriate language for themselves as individuals and to really think about how to achieve the following:
  1. Making their speech clear and concise (keeping to the timeframe)
  2. Persuasive language they feel is convincing and are comfortable with using.
  3. Language that is challenging, but that they could use in the future.
  4. Language that they overuse and is not very persuasive.
Students created their own list of words and statements to consider using in their next debate.

Tomorrow we will discuss the debate, providing feedback and suggestions to both teams based on our discoveries today, and to also consider our action for next time.

The judges will deliberate and provide feedback before giving their decision.

More debates will continue tomorrow, so watch this space for what is discovered and where it leads us.
