Maths Investigation

Students have spent time this unit investigating and learning about volume through a series of explorations using real life scenarios.

We have used many hands on items to explore volume and are now relating our knowledge to real life situations through a series of word problems.

During this time, students have been focusing on clear and logical setting out to reveal their understanding step by step.

This past week we have been working on a project to create our own sculptures that will be assessed by our peers in connection to calculating volume using a project checklist and rubric.

Here are pictures of students during their group work and the results of this exercise are at the bottom:

Another sample structure before discussion!

Sample sculpture before assessment discussion!
There were some moments that had to be ironed out!
Interesting discussions ensued in relation to assessing each other's structures.
There were some frustrating times!

This investigation has led to an interest in the work of David Smith, a sculptor whose work from his Cubi series, uses multiple rectangular prisms to create his structures!

We are thinking of making our own sculpture, using his work as our inspiration.

Let's see what ensues!
